A Word from Our President Rick Stevenson

I have been a Rotarian since 1999. I joined the Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary for the opportunity to exhibit the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Service was modeled for me as I was growing up. My mother was honored for 50 years of service to Meals on Wheels and my father was honored for serving with my mother for 30 years after his retirement. I am active in the community in a variety of service capacities. One of the things that I am most proud of is my Chairpersonship of the Brandywine Valley Heating and Air Conditioning Challenge for Cancer Bike Ride event. The 2018 edition of the event will be the 20th anniversary and we will be approaching $600,000.00 donated to patient care at the Abramson Cancer Center of the Chester County Hospital and the Visiting Nurse Association.

The Sunrise Club has a commitment of community service to the Food Cupboard on West Chester. Our club contributes to the organization financially and members donate the time for food runs, working with clients, and mentoring for grant writing and board functions. Additionally, the club is also involved in numerous community service projects.

The largest fund-raising event of the club is a combined effort with the WEGO Rotary Club to host the annual Souperbowl. Held the Friday night of the Super Bowl, this is a soup and beer competition together with a silent auction and entertainment.

Rotary has connections to the international efforts to eradicate polio world-wide. Local Rotary’s are also involved in the areas of service for Rotary.

Rotary’s six areas of service include:

1. Promoting Peace,
2. Fighting Disease,
3. Providing Clean Water,
4. Helping Mothers and Children,
5. Supporting Education and
6. Growing Local Economies.

I look forward to my year as President of the Sunrise Club as my involvement has been rewarding from a friendship and service standpoint.
Rick Stevenson
