About Our Club
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs. Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club is one of 52 clubs in the Southeastern Pennsylvania District #7450.
The Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club (GWSRC) held its first meeting on September 28, 1988 at the West Chester Inn. GWCSRC was jointly sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of West Chester and Westtown-Goshen (WEGO). Greg Kalemjian, Furman Gyger, and Elwood (“Ossie”) Spellman were supporters. The first officers were Rev. Robert Young, Dan Harpstead, Greg Bowen, Roland Woodward, Ann Morris, and Dan Ginty. The first board members were Doug Barr, Steve Boyer, Steve McGann, Conrad Muhly, Howard Stevens, and Wayne Stevenson, with Dick Yoder added at a December board meeting.
As a provisional club, GWCSRC began meeting in the Food Workes Restaurant in October, 1988. On March 1, 1989, the club was chartered at a banquet in Frazer at which D.G. “Ossie” Spellman presided. Charter members were Douglass Barr, William Baxter, Gregory Bowen, Steve Boyer, Wendy Berry Carr, Lee Fisher, Irving Friedlander, Seth Gardner, Daniel Ginty, Daniel Harpstead, Matthew Kane, Roger Kennedy, Stephen McGann, Ann Moris, Conrad Muhly, Louis Pedante, Tim Ringgold, Jeff Rollison, John Saling, Howard Stevens, Wayne Stevenson, Roland Woodward, and Robert Young. It was believed that a breakfast club could attract new members whose schedules could best accommodate an early-morning meeting.
Having started with 23 charter members, GWCSR now operates with an ongoing membership of approximately 52. The governing body of the Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club is a Board of Directors, comprised of at least eight but not more than thirteen members elected at large by the club membership. Four directors are elected each year to serve staggered two-year terms with the immediate past president serving as an ex officio of the Board.
